Comments on Kerry Hall/Music, Here

As requested here's a post that can take comments. I'll move all of the previous post/comments tomorrow (I hope) and have everything assembled here for easy reference. And thanks again for all of the feedback and conversation today.

The room we have class in I think of the song Rise of the Pentagram by Crydle of Filth because the son starts off as a poem with no music the goes to music and no words. It reminds me of class when something is read or said and then everyone starts talking at once.

on the floor we're on in the hall way I think of drums because whenever I'm in that hall area I always hear that stuff from the classes going on.

In the stairways I think of the son Billy Jean by Michal Jackson. I don't really know why, it might have just popped in my head when I was there.

On the second floor I hear that song that Pink Floyd does about the school kids. I forget the name of the song but I think you know the one I'm talking about. I hear that because the hallways seem kind of blah and since it is a music room area it gives me that strict teacher feel.

On the ground floor I don't hear a song. Instead I get the sence like it is that quiet time between songs or that silence at the biggining of a casset tape.

Then in the basement I hear the song Mr Crawley by Black Sabbith because it has that dark theatrical feeling to it, the song and the basement.

Our classroom makes me think of that White Stripes song about the squirrel girl (can't remenber the title). It starts with a man speaking, then turns into this rock song. It reminds me of the way our readings snowball into discussion.

3rd floor hallway: Bright classical piano. There are always ballet classes going on, and I always associate ballet with classical piano.

2nd floor hallway: "Moon Shadow" by Cat Stevens. It's a little more mellow. Also, the first line talks about being followed, and this floor always seemed haunted to me.

2nd floor stairway: "Little Ghost" by White Stripes. Definately feels haunted...nuf said.

Basement hallway: The theme from Schindler's List. It's so bare and quiet and lonely.

The vending room: The theme from Team America ("America, Fuck Yeah). Something about the over-processed food and the fact that it costs too much...just made me think of it.

The lounge: Something by Feist. It feels warm and laid-back, like I feel when I listen to Feist.

starting with the third floor, the way the dancers moved prompted something like: da de da de dah, and it got me to thinking, "I believe" from the movie Honey.

The second floor was very different, I got this sad feeling, Something like when the ship sinks and 1,500 people die, and it is the violins that playing during this tragedy: Titanic.

The first floor was much busier, more like a thump da-da da de da thump: like a black eyes themed song. Maybe "where is the love"?

The basement gave me a construstion type of song. Like is is great to be working. If you have seen the movie Toys with Robbin Williams, you will recgonize the happy while you work song. Smiles ~Ryan

3rd Floor Hall: Oingo Boingo—I saw a guy holding a pair of bongos, which made me think of boingos, which made me think of Oingo Boingo. I have never listened to a song by Oingo Boingo.

Stairwell: Bloc Party; “Blue Light”, “Hunting for Witches”—the light in the stairwell reminded me of the motif they use on their album covers.

2nd Floor Hall: Alan Moore; “I Like the Boots”—there’s this one scene in “V for Vendetta” (the comic book) where this woman is doing a routine extolling the virtues of fascism at a burlesque show. There was a poster for a burlesque show and that’s what it reminded me of.

1st Floor Hall: Phoenix Wright; “Godot”—okay first off, Phoenix Wright is not an artist, it’s a video game. It’s a video game about being a lawyer. You get to yell out “objection!” and point your finger accusingly at the suspect. It also has really good music. One of the tracks is this smooth jazz song and the brass and coffee finishes of the first floor reminded me of the song’s classy low-keyness.

Basement: Frank Zappa; Joe’s Garage, specifically “Cyborg”—the basement makes me think of that part of Cyborg where he sings about Joe getting oral sex from a toaster. I don’t think that the basement really caused that directly, but rather that I was thinking about songs, and Cyborg by default is a pretty memorable thing to have listened to.

Elevator: That weird discordant string music you hear in psychological thrillers, like an M. Night Shyalaman flick—an elevator is an enclosed space. Enclosed spaces are perfect for murdering people. Think about it.

Courtyard: Survivor; “Eye of the Tiger”—eye of the tiger! Do doo do do de doo, do dah, doo dah doo do doo dooo dah, dunh nah eye of the tiger! Doo doo dooooo dooood dooooo dooooe doooo daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah, eye of the tiger!

Kerry Hall in general reminds me of "Dance of the Knights" by Sergei Prokofiev because that was one of the songs the pianist played in my ballet classes.

In the stairway I was reminded of Jimi Hendrix's "Castles Made of Sand" only because there was a girl whering a shirt with his face on it.

The area around Kerry Hall and the building itself reminds me of 20's jazz music and stuff like in the "Great Gatsby" because the style of it all.

Downstairs in the basement all I hear is white noise, with the walls and everything. It looks like a creepy hospital.
